Is Psilocybin Therapy Safe? How We Screen, Prepare, and Hold the Experience

Safety is usually the second question people ask us, right after legality, and often it is the question underneath all the others. People want to know whether they will be okay, who will be with them, and what happens if something feels like too much.

These questions deserve honest answers, so here is how safety works at Numia, step by step.

It starts before you ever arrive

Psilocybin therapy is a good fit for many people, and for some people it is the wrong fit. Our screening exists to tell the difference, and we take it seriously.

Eligibility is first assessed during a free 15-minute consultation. Psilocybin is not recommended for individuals with a personal or close family history of psychosis or schizophrenia, and certain medications, including lithium, require careful review. If we believe this work is unsafe for you, we will say so plainly and help you think about what might serve you better. Turning someone away thoughtfully is part of the care.

If the consultation suggests a good fit, you then have a deeper conversation with a facilitator handpicked for your goals and background. Only after that do you move into preparation.

You are never alone in the experience

On journey day, your facilitator is present the entire time, from the moment you arrive until the medicine has fully resolved, typically five to eight hours. Our facilitators are clinically trained, with backgrounds in psychology, social work, and trauma-informed care, and they have guided over 300 legal journeys.

The medicine itself is grown, tested, and tracked under Colorado’s regulatory framework, with dosing tailored to you and discussed together in preparation. Every part of the day is planned with you and responsive to you.

Challenging moments can arise, and this is worth saying clearly. Difficult emotions sometimes surface, and that is often where the healing lives. Your facilitator’s role is to hold steady, keep you physically and emotionally safe, and help you stay with what is unfolding rather than fight it. Trauma is known to be stored in the body, and sometimes what needs to move cannot be reached with words alone; a safe, held setting is what allows that movement to happen gently.

The space matters more than people expect

From the moment you walk through the door, we want you to feel wrapped in warmth, almost as if you have entered a calm, beautiful home, with soft light, comfortable furniture, and quiet. The environment is intentional because your nervous system reads the room long before your mind does, and feeling safe is a precondition for going deep.

Safety extends after the journey

Preparation and integration carry the same weight in our protocol as the journey itself. Two preparation sessions build trust and intention before journey day, and two integration sessions afterward help you make sense of what surfaced and carry it into your life. As Carolina, our founder and clinical director, puts it: this is where the real work happens. You leave with support, a plan, and people who know your story.

What the research says

Decades of clinical research, including trials at Johns Hopkins and Imperial College London, have found psilocybin to be physiologically well tolerated in screened, supported settings, with a low potential for addiction. The risks that do exist are managed through careful screening, professional support, and thorough integration. This is where science meets care and tenderness.

If safety is your hesitation

That hesitation is healthy, and we would rather answer your questions directly than have you wonder. Our free 15-minute consultation exists for exactly this conversation.
